Rotary Club Nadiad Samaj Seva And Sansodhan Trust

It was in 1976 when the idea to start a project for hearing impaired children was conceived by Rotary Club Nadiad.

Kheda district was one of the most prosperous districts of Gujarat. But it had no facility to impart education for deaf children. On 13th July, 1976 Rotary Club Nadiad resolved to form a dedicated Trust viz. Rotary Club Nadiad Samaj seva And Sansodhan Trust to start the project for education and betterment of hearing impaired children. An adhoc committee of 9 members was formed.

Something More About Us

The first classroom with seven students was inaugurated by then Mahant PP Narayandasji Maharaj at Satsang Bhavan, santaram Mandir, Nadiad. As number of students increased, classroom was shifted to Aarogya Bhavan at Santaram Mandir. After initial stage, the project received good support from the community. With the number of students increasing continuously, it was decided to start a full fledged school with all facilities for deaf care. In the f irst phase, about 10,000 sq. mtrs of land was acquired in 1977. A donation of Rs. 150,000 was received from Shri Muljibhai Brambhatt in memory of his father Late Somabhai Gendalbhai Brahmbhatt and accordingly the Primary School was started with name of “S G Brahmbhatt Badhir Vidyavihar “. The campus was designed as per the guidlines of London based Royal Society For Deaf. At present, the campus is spread over about 28000 sq. mtrs.

The Project received overwhelming support from all avenues and it was time to no looking back from here onwards. In 1982, with financial support from Shri Manubhai I. Patel in memory of his mother Smt Maniben Patel, a modern hostel with about 100 beds for boys and girls was started. With increase in number of students admitted in school, need to enhance hostel facility was felt. In 2003, with financial support from the family members of President Dr. J.C. Patel, a new hostel building accommodating 300 beds was built and named as “Shri C.J.Patel Hostel “.

In 1996, when we completed 20 years of our Trust’s service, we evaluated the impact of our efforts on our past students. It was shocking that in spite of giving best academic education, it was very difficult for the students to earn livelihood. So it was decided that in addition to primary education, we need to equip them with professional skills. A workshop was started to give vocational training in basic trades like tailoring, lathe operating, carpentry etc. The results were encouraging and this led to setting up a comprehensive vocational training centre. During this time, Shri Gordhanbhai Hathibhai Patel, a reputed and renowned donor visited our project and was impressed by our working. With his major donation, “Shri G. H. Patel Vocational Training And Rehabilitation Centre “ was started with about twelve courses in 1997. But inspite of best training, government approved certificate was needed to make the students employable. With support of Technical Education Board, Government of Gujarat, three certificate courses were started: i) Computer & artwork ii) Electric motor rewinding and services and iii) Plumbing & Sanitary works.

With advent of time, it was felt that more professional training in the vocational trades are required for better job opportunities. This led us to plan for Government approved ITI centre.

In the year 2000, we decided to start Secondary schooling and approached the authorities for necessary permission. After much delay, we were granted permission in the year 2003. At this time, one of our well wisher and major donor London based Shri Kantibhai Ravjibhai Patel visited our school. He was impressed by the idea of starting the first Secondary school for hearing impaired in Gujarat and with his substantial financial support in memory of his late daughter Ms. Ushma, we started “Ushma Badhir Secondary School “ in 2003 for Std. VIII. Subsequently, classes for Std. IX and X were also added. Results were very encouraging and in the very first year we achieved 100% success rate and this continued till 2013. This led us to start Higher Secondary section in 2013 and thus it is now “Ushma Badhir Secondary and Higher Secondary School”

It was observed that average age of admission of the students till 1996 was 8 years and 11 months and it was difficult to address the hearing deficiency at this age. We decided to ‘ catch them young’ and with considerable efforts we are able to bring down the average age of admission to 4 years . This was made possible by donation received from our founder member and treasurer Late Shri Rameshbhai R. Parikh and a pre primary centre in the name of “ Shri Dhirajba Badhir Pre Primary section”. This centre gives training for K.G. and Nursery children. The parents of the students are also given special training to communicate with their children. This efforts paid dividends because in initial years, our students were able to complete curriculum upto Std. VII classes in 13 years but now they are completing it with same syllabus as like other normal students.

Our goal is total care of hearing impaired children. Therefore, with education and vocational training we take care to address their hearing deficiency also. With financial support from USA based Smt. Savitaben & Vallavbhai Patel Foundation Trust we have fully equipped Audiometry and Speech Therapy Centre. Hear we do hearing screening of neonatals also the school students are regularly checked for the hearing loss. As Technology developed, better hearingaids were avilable, but they were costly which most of our parents couldn’t afford so we decided to formed “HEARINGAID BANK”. Here we provide financial support to acquire new hearing aids. And they are monitored and maintained regularly by our technicians.

Goverrnment started cochlear implant surgeries free for 0 to 5 years children for which post operative theraputic training, mapping and device care is essential we noticed that many children don’t achieve desired outcomes due to lack of post operative training and maintenance of device so we started POST OPERATIVE THERAPUTIC CENTER FOR COCHLEAR IMPLANT PATIENTS.WHICH IS AFFILIATED WITH GOVERNMENT ‘S RBSK PROGRAMME.In center children and their parents are participating in Auditory Verbal Therapy.their mapping and maintenance of implant also done regularly.
